Savannah 1 - Habitat for Humanity (5)

Today was our last day of service with Habitat for Humanity. We started the day of with a plentiful pancake breakfast made by Gunnar. Everyone was pumped to get back to serving with our new family. We were able to challenge ourselves today by doing something new. We worked with power drills for the first time while putting up new shelves in the ReStore. It was interesting to be starting on a new project in the ReStore after being used to working on the same thing for the past three days. In addition to assembling the new shelves, we also began to organize the furniture and appliances that we had previously stored into the locations they would be when the ReStore would finally open. Our group and the workers of the ReStore harmoniously worked together through the hours. Everyone was so happy to be seeing the results of all of our labor and how much was accomplished. Although we were all happy about our achievements, it was a bittersweet feeling to know this would be our last opportunity to be working with the amazing staff of the ReStore. A staff member, Mrs. Briggs, who we had worked with all week was kind enough to take time out of her day to return the ReStore to see our group off before we left. Everyone in our group was happy to see Mrs. Briggs again, and happy to know that we were able to communicate love to someone we came into contact with while serving. Finally after cleaning up trash around the facility it was time to say our goodbyes. It wasn't easy for us to leave a place full of people that gave us such a wonderful opportunity to serve, but we were thankful that we had the chance to come to Savannah and make a difference. After our time at the ReStore, we all headed to Wormsloe Plantation to sightsee. Although rain was pouring down, we had a great time going outside and taking pictures. Next, we drove to the historic Bonaventure cemetery. We were able to explore the beauty of this cemetery and check out many of the historic graves. At dinner we had a feast of spaghetti casserole and chili and were joined by a guest, Shaun, from the ReStore. After dinner we had reflection on our last principle "Bring it home." We all agreed that this week of service was an experience that we would definitely be applying the lesson to our lives back in Columbia. We closed the night out with an awesome game of Sardines. This week was truly a breathtaking experience.
