JackAttack: The Definition of GUMBY
March 23, 2014
All participants were sleeping peacefully, when all of a sudden they were awoken by an unfamiliar voice; it was a man who belonged to the Episcopal Church. The time was 8:50 a.m. and the man informed participants that there was going to be a meeting in their living quarters at 9:00 a.m. sharp. This particular group is your typical adolescent crowd, therefore not the most tidy and definitely would not be classified as "morning people"; so there was pretty much no way possible to have the place presentable for a meeting in ten minutes AND be ready to leave the area to head to their service site within ten minutes. Participants tried their hardest not to imitate zombies while dragging themselves out of bed to try and accomplish the impossible task. Both bathrooms were being utilized to their full extent while a few participants attempted to organize and clean up the area. While all of the rush and panic was occurring, the meeting had gotten moved to another building and there was a sigh of relief from all participants. With that weight lifted off their shoulders JackAttack departed for their second trip to Clarke School for Hearing and Speech!
Since the groups service day at the Clarke School for Hearing and Speech was on a Sunday, when school is not in session, the participants did not get to meet the kids. Once JackAttack found out their site for Service Day Two was only two minutes from the school, they knew it was meant to be; they would meet the amazing children that attended the school before beginning service day two. The students were so happy to meet JackAttack because they absolutely love their playground and were so excited to have a safer environment to play on. Participants had the pleasure of attending a few classes and seeing the different stages of improvement the kids were in and really got to see how great of a program Clarke offers. Once pictures were taken and a few sad goodbyes were given, JackAttack was on to tackle the Gem and Minerals Society service event. Now for those of you who do not know, Jacksonville is a health service trip, but hey #serviceISservice. Upon arrival there was not another car or person in sight; this was due to the unfortunate occurrence of miscommunication, but GUMBILY it worked out for JackAttack to reschedule the landscaping of the Gem and Mineral Society. After a very gumby morning the group headed back to the St. Mark's Episcopal youth center, (their living quarters) and took a load off their feet during the few hours of free time they had before leaving for their second service site of the day, L'Arche Harbor House. A few participants remained at the youth center and had a little shut eye with some netflix on the side, while the other half of participants ventured out to check out the notorious "Swag Shop". After trecking through the store, JackAttack exited the store with so much swag breh, the rest of the day was just set out to be dope! The group had so much swag they loaded up the vehicles and departed for L'Arche with readiness to spread the swaginess, but then the swag was interrupted. The group had not even made it a mile down the road when they found out their living quarters were once again going to be used for a meeting; JackAttack #stayedGumby as always! In an attempt to make it to L'Arche on scheduled time AND make their living quarters presentable for a meeting, the group split into two!
With the manifestation of time being an issue, group one gathered all the participants belongings and sleeping quarters and stacked them all in one small room on top of a pool table for the most efficiency. This group is just by far the most clever MAB group in all mankind, snaps all around.
While group one of JackAttack was accomplishing their task, group two headed to L'Arche Harbor House to meet with the coordinator and get prepared for service. A little about L'Arche, "L'Arche Harbor House is a community with five family-style homes, the Blanchart Community Center and an off-site day program called the Rainbow Workshop"(Jacksonville, L'Arche 2015). L'Arche was overjoyed that the group had chosen them as one of their main sites and immediately gave the participants the opportunity to meet the core members of the houses. JackAttack was split into groups of two and three participants per house and was given the whole evening to serve throughout their specific house and get to know the members. Dinner was served, stories were shared, games were played and memories were made. The group had many impactful moments that I am so glad to be given the honor to share with you more in depth in tomorrow's blog, along with descriptions of each houses members! Until next time.
XOXO,
JackAttack
