Aurora – Children (2)

On our second day of service, we woke up ready to tackle another day of coloring, crafting and playing with kids at Children's Hospital Colorado. We switched between crafting on the clinic floors of the hospital and volunteering in the Creative Play Center, which is the facility in the hospital that lets siblings of patients play while their sibling gets treatment.

We all quickly decided that the best part of the Creative Play Center is what we like to call "the blue spinny chair." Outside on the playground of the Creative Play Center, there lies a seemingly inconspicuous egg-shaped chair that spins. Every kid who goes nears it becomes absolutely obsessed with it, and we even had a competition to see which kid could spin the fastest. Some of us even took a spin in the chair ourselves...
After another great day at the hospital, our group ventured to Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater, which is a concert venue right outside of Denver that has hosted legendary music acts, such as the Beatles and U2. The rocks took our breath away when we first walked up, and we couldn't help but feel tiny standing next to the massive rocks.
In addition to the amphitheater, there are some trails at Red Rocks that we decided to hike. The scenery was magical, and we were able to get great views of the park as the sun was slowly setting. The only bad part about the trail was that the first part was downhill, which meant the end of our hike was completely uphill. Some of us had a hard time trekking back up to the top, but we all made it back to our vans in one piece.
We drove back into Denver and had a delicious dinner at Annie's Cafe on Colfax in Denver. The highlight of the night, however, was our dessert trip to Voodoo Donuts. Most of us got cool, unique donuts, like some topped with Froot Loops or Cap'n Crunch, but Cole, one of our site leaders, decided to order a donut that was as big as his head. If he ate the donut in less than 80 seconds, he got it for free. The whole donut shop was cheering him on, and he almost completed the challenge. Unfortunately, he couldn't finish the very last bite and ended up having to pay for his massive donut. However, the hilarious memories will live on forever.
Our third day of service was probably our most exciting day at the hospital thus far. 9News, the local NBC affiliate, came to the hospital to do a story on us. They talked to our site leaders and some of the children and got some adorable shots of us crafting with the kids. Today we broke out our best Easter crafts, and we created some seriously impressive Easter eggs and chicks.

We finished the day out by delivering snacks to the nurses and doctors on all the floors of the hospital, volunteering at the speech therapy center and playing with kids at the Creative Play Center. At night, the Calvary Baptist Church, the church that is graciously letting us use their accommodations for a week, invited us to have a homemade dinner with them. The church made some extremely yummy soups for us to enjoy, and we all loved meeting more members of the church.

Exhausted from playing with children all day (hey, coloring is tiring!), we went to bed Wednesday night excited for our final two days of service and anxious to find out how else we can serve Children's Hospital Colorado.
