It's safe to say that after a six hour ride with 12 people packed into a single van, singing along to a playlist consisting of everything from Josh Groban to Afroman, spending a day at the Memphis Zoo, and stuffing ourselves with some traditional Memphis BBQ… our little MAB group that started as acquaintances has become quite the family.
It all started when our van rolled up to the Mizzou student center Saturday afternoon. We all crammed, and I mean CRAMMED, in and hit the open road.
After six hours we arrived at our first housing site, which is a high school outside of Memphis. We completely took over the school library and got right down to our first order of business: crafting. Shortly after we crawled into our sleeping bags and rested up for the exciting week ahead.
Sunday we had our free day. The first stop of the day (after Starbucks, of course) was Wal-Mart where we purchased the revolutionary "selfie stick". After that, we travelled to the Memphis Zoo with extremely high hopes that we would be able to feed the giraffes. Unfortunately, this attraction is closed in the winter, but at least we got a few great pictures of the 12 of us with the animals. Other highlights included a pretty adorable sea lion show and a retweet from Chancellor Loftin.
After catching a few Z's, we hit Corky's for some good ole fashioned Memphis BBQ. Dinner was a huge success because had the best waitress ever (shoutout to Anita) and ate so much pulled pork that we basically waddled out of the restaurant.
All in all, it was an adventurous two days. Our group of 12 people who barely knew each other on Saturday morning is heading into our first day of service on Monday as a tight-knit group of friends.
We can't wait to see what is in store for Memphis 3. This week is sure to be an amazing experience volunteering at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
Keep it Beale,
Memphis 3
