Today was another day filled with activities and accomplishments. We started off at 9 again (not before leisurely pancakes of course) by heading to the shelter to clean out and organize a number of closets filled with office supplies, baby clothes and items, and other hygiene and non-food donations. We've gotten really good at organizing.
After a quick break at the apartments, we served a lasagna lunch to the residents and hung around for some fun conversations. We headed to the admin building again after where we split off to work on more designs, gala invitation organization, a homelessness simulation, gala decor, and more. 4 of us headed to the thrift shop to organize some donations.
We had a wonderful and unexpectedly spicy chicken, rice and vegetable dinner with the residents. After, we attended the resident meeting where we caught up on some quick memos about laundry care, shower hygiene and announcements for bingo tomorrow (!!!!!!!) at the shelter.
We're now ending our night with a casual game of Phase 10, Dad learning to sew the holes in his jeans and some fresh chocolate chip cookies. Looking forward to some more projects tomorrow and SUN!
The Best Parts Of Our Day
Laura: One of the families waiting all day for a room was at dinner (meaning they got a room.) They were out there forever and I was happy to see they got in. They were just so thankful for the food we brought them earlier. I was really happy to see them.
Kelsey: Talking with the family I sat at with dinner. They were really nice and reminded me of my family. We got to talk about books. All four of them were super warm and a kind family.
Mikeita: I played Loaded Questions with the kids. They are hilarious. I sat with them at lunch earlier too. (These are the philosophers - see last post)
Tifanesha: Seeing the residents interacting at meetings and playing games. And Ian said I can help him cook lunch tomorrow!
Erin: At dinner we were waiting in line and one of the girls from our college night came up and hugged me and walked away. Then I sat next to her and we talked. We had matching boots yesterday. We're kindred spirits.
Chen: The store is pretty awesome. It has such purple things. (The building is purple!) I love it. They have everything. It was pretty enjoyable working with Chuka. He's a fun guy.
*Here we have a discussion about a broken vase that might be from the Ming Dynasty but probably only cost five dollars, and things get weird*
Also, Chen got a rotisserie chicken from Walmart and thoroughly enjoyed it. "It's not a physical need. It's an emotional need."
Chuka: There was this one shoe I liked at the store and I kept looking at it. This guy came in and started looking at it, and he got it. I saw him get it, and I kept on doing what I was doing. He came to show us it. They cost 250 really and he got them for 6 dollars, and I felt really happy for him even though I wanted them. He seemed to really like them and that was awesome.
We may have saved some baby lives because we got rid of a lot of expired baby food today in the closets too.
*Insert history lesson on family units in America because #education*
Natalie: Today Erin, Ben and I got to help start creating a homelessness simulation where we create characters with backgrounds that lead to homelessness in some way, shape or form. It was really interesting to work on something like this and think about ways to teach people about stereotypes and how we can make this kind of simulation really effective for participants. Shout out to our favorite character Dale in his bucket hat and his dog Abe.
Ben: I really enjoyed working on the poverty simulation and listening to the kids talking about books with Kelsey at dinner. It was kind of deep for meeting them for only a few minutes and was good conversation.
Sabrina: I really enjoyed being at the thrift store and watching Chen and Chuka sort items and bond.
