Service, Day 3: Today our group moved mountains. Well not really but it's pretty comparable. We were privileged enough to with both Habichatt's initiative, Neighborhood Revitalization and the Restore. The Restore team cleared out a large home full of generous donations. The day was spent using our large muscles and excellent spacial organization skills to pack up over four rooms of donations. These donations were then unloaded at the Restore to be sold. The Restore is truly what keeps Habichatt running. With most of the fundraising donations going to acquiring land, the Restore's revenue keeps the whole program running.
The Revitalization team had a very exciting day, mostly because of hazmat suits and lead paint. Two houses were worked on today doing some finishing touches on one and starting another. We installed insulation into the crawl space, power washed the house, and hand-built a stair case. Others geared-up to scrape-off lead paint! Whoo toxins! (it was actually a very safe removal with proper precautions). While the hazmat suits were warm, they were also stuffy and difficult to work it; however, by the end of the day all the lead paint had been scraped-off the house. It is actually really great to know that we were not only able to make a person's house a more pleasing place to live in, but also make it healthier. It was safe to say this work day was full of tons of hard-work and our participants handled it like champions. Their endurance and determination to keep moving and making a difference beat the cold, the monogamous tasks, and the heavy lifting.
But that wasn't enough for us. To top the night off the group went indoor rock climbing in downtown Chattanooga. This rock climbing place is unique in that you can climb walls inside and outside that light up. Everyone conquered the outdoors walls, but unfortunately many of the lows of the night came from bouldering walls that were impassible (we blame it on the fatigue from all our service). Check out the picture below!
Some of the many donations we expertly packed and moved.
Workin' at the House Wash (like car wash… but not).
Jessie and Heisenberg (well almost) ready to get scraping.
Painthing a new house!
10 minutes later we parallel parked White Dove for the first time!
Outdoor climbing wall that starts on the second floor. Heights don't scare us.
Look at our participants bouldering.
Yea, we are ROCKstars. ha #punny
