Austin - Environment

Howdy Yall!

The gang here has gotten really close. No really, we have gotten really close. 11 of us packed up a week of our lives and crammed into a van. We've traveled through the cold como rain and the red Oklahoma Clay, right on down to the Big state of Texas (Tejas to the natives). We picked up another MAB'r in Plano bringing our total to 12.  When we arrived in Austin we received a BIG TEXAS WELCOME.  Our ranch (the Townlake YMCA) has been more than hospitable. Living in a building with more machines than people may terrify some apocalyptic types, but none of these fearless individuals. Making friends with night staff has its perks and you really don't get to know people well into you are laying out play mats and yoga mats around midnight.

Part of our volunteer work for the Austin's Park Foundation was to remove the invasive lugustrum trees that are destroying the habitat of native plant life.  While at our housing we happened to talk to some people who voiced their frustration towards the lugustrum trees, so it was awesome to know that we were helping a relevant issue that actually mattered to the community. To wrap up the time at our first service site we went out to dinner with Bill, the man from the Austin Parks Foundation who worked with us during the past two days. He appeared to be just as grateful as we were!

We look forward to working with the Sustainable Food Center!
