New Orleans, LA - Homelessness and Poverty (Post 3)

After some of us decided to stay up until 2 a.m. last night, getting ready for day 3 was a little rough. After getting lost for approximately the 10 millionth time, we made it to Love in Action Outreach just in time to start distributing boxes of food to senior citizens. That job alone kept us busy all day. We distributed more than 700 boxes of food to more than 500 people.

We've been sharing our volunteer space with a few other groups, but this afternoon it was just us and the permanent Love in Action Outreach staff. There weren't a lot of slow moments in the food distribution line until the end of the day, but when we did have down time, we had some amazing conversations with the staff.

Tomorrow we're probably going to be the only ones working again. It'll be a food pantry day, which is super busy, but Miss Gail — one of the most lovely, selfless human beings we've ever had the pleasure of meeting — thinks we'll be able to handle it.

After our service, we made it back into the city to check out the French Market. Hannah accidentally learned how to haggle. We all gorged on food, because in this city you eat approximately 6 meals a day.

Speaking of meals, tonight was Taco Tuesday because of course it was. Shout out to cooks Patrick, Shelby, Sam, Jasmine and Alex. We finished the night with some casual Tinder action and some more serious reflection time.

Reflection is a safe space, but tonight we talked about what MAB means to us. Also, #privilege, which has become something of a running joke in our group, despite being tied to an incredibly real and serious phenomenon.

New Orleans has taught us all so much in just a few short days. We can't wait to see what we'll learn tomorrow.

Service brings people together in some beautiful ways.
