Jackson, MS - Health (Post 4)

We woke up this morning, and the weather was a little dreary with expected rain and thunderstorms. We received a call from the Community Garden and they told us that they were unable to accommodate us for the day. However, we still made the best out of our day by calling Galloway United Methodist church in hopes of them needing our service. Fortunately, they were happy enough to open their doors to our service once again.

We started off serving lunch at Grace Place to individuals in need of a meal. Once again, we were surprised to see that some of these people weren't just there for food, but for the love and support of the members of Galloway. After the meal was served, we did a number of service activities including raking the front of the facility, organizing clothes in their donation closet, and putting together three different bookshelves.

As we reflect on our trip, we've realized very quickly that Grace Place and Galloway have been a huge part of what we are taking away from our time in Jackson. Grace Place goes well beyond providing a meal for people in need, and focuses more on a long term investment of an individual and providing someone with the opportunities that everyone is deserving of. Our generation is taught to look away from people who aren't as fortunate as us but Mizzou has taught us to unite together as one. By working at Grace Place and interacting with these people, we can expand our values to not just Mizzou students but individuals all across the nation.

As we came home we were surprised to find that a parent of one of the children at RideABILITY commented on a Facebook picture of us doing service and said the following:

Tomorrow, we are leaving for home after we serve at the Hope House of Hospitality.  It's a bittersweet moment for us because, although we miss our home, we feel that we have become a part of the Jackson community.  This was an experience that we will never forget.

Peace and Blessings,
 The Jackson Crew
