Yesterday's theme of the day was "Bringing it home." Throughout the day we focused on things that we could gain from this experience and apply back home at Mizzou. The day began slow due to the rainy weather and flooding in the street on the way to our work site. After parking the van in a safe location we used our larger vehicle to get everyone safely to the site.
Once we all made it to the site we got back to work by finishing up tasks inside of the home we had all become pretty attached to. We were split into groups by the site supervisor that were instructed to either clean floors, finish painting trim, or place finishing touches on the walls. The group quickly realized that all of the work we had done earlier in the week left us with fewer tasks to complete, and only the finishing touches were left. That being said, we managed to complete the remaining tasks within a half-day's time.
While finishing up tasks around the house we also got to know our site coordinators a little better. We even learned that our site coordinators were engaged (which we had no idea about) and got to even hear their engagement story during our morning break.
As we realized that the trip was beginning to wrap up we all started to be able to see how we were personally impacted by our experience in Gulfport. The entire trip benefited each volunteer in our group in a different way. A variety of things that were gathered from the trip included new construction skills, an increased drive to further serve others, life-long friendships, a better understanding of the purpose of serving others, and many other countless things.
