Gulfport, MS - Habitat for Humanity (Post 2)

Hello again, friends! Today we had our first day serving with Habitat for Humanity of the Mississippi Gulf Coast! Several of us woke up bright and early and started our day out with McDonald's coffee for everyone, and even some cinnamon bites for our very own birthday boy, GREG! After arriving at our site, we met our awesome supervisor, Ken, who taught us so much about how to properly paint a house. Did you know you're not supposed to wipe your paintbrush on the side of the can? We sure didn't!

After our lesson, we got to work painting ceilings, walls, doors, windowsills, trims, and baseboards. In addition to this, we sanded a door, cleaned up, and some of our men even learned how to re-hinge a door! We accomplished a lot more than we expected to on our first day. At first, each of us were wondering if all the small things we were doing were really going to matter in the end because they seemed minor at the time, but by the end of the day we could all see that the small things were adding up to really make a difference. Some of our participants even discussed organizing students to serve with the Habitat for Humanity located in Columbia, so that we could bring our service back home with us.

We had some bumps in the road: a participant made an imprint in the wall with a certain asset of hers, and when we got back to our condo our water wasn't running, but our spirits never faltered and we can't wait to see what adventures await us tomorrow! But for now, it's time to dig in to Ol' Greg's birthday cake and take selfies in our awesome party hats.
