We are staying in the basement of the Christ Episcopal Church in one big room on a bunch of mattresses. There is another group here from Boulder, Colorado, sleeping in the sanctuary upstairs.
Today we got up bright and early to drive an hour to the nearest Wal-Mart (in Pierre, the capitol of South Dakota.) After spending a solid two hours buying our groceries (and a couple hoola hoops) for the week, we returned to the church to eat our lunch, take showers, and play several very intense rounds of Catchphrase.
Tina, one of our wonderful site leaders, experienced a leaking flooding toilet and promptly called for our help. She cried out, “Help! Guys! The toilet is really leaking, like, a lot! Get a mop!”
After we searched high and low for a mop (we initially couldn’t find one), Tina said, “I don’t care what we use! Grab a broom, or a shovel!”
A shovel.
After the mess was fixed, we headed to the Boys and Girls Club to play games with some of the local children and hang out with them for the afternoon.
They had an overwhelming amount of energy and gave us sleep-deprived college kids a run for our money. We played freeze tag, sang songs, and all got beaten horribly in several games of pool.
When we were coming back from a rendezvous on the playground, a 9-year-old boy named Julius looked at me and said “I think you guys are kinda nice.” I told him he was kinda nice too. Then he ran to catch up with his friends.
The week is off to a great start. I am sitting here trying to write this blog and Tina keeps shouting different topics to me and she doesn’t understand that my creative juices must flow organically.
We are looking forward to more time spent working with Habitat, getting to know the kids, and continuing to learn from them and each other.
P.S. We went to Wyoming.
