Denver, CO 1 - Habitat for Humanity (Post 5)

Today was our final day working on the Globeville town homes on our Habitat for Humanity site. We did not need much orientation today because we all had a good knowledge of what we were going to be doing. This is due to the fact that the night before we went to a community chili night at the Habitat office.

At chili night we bonded with Mizzou Grads and high school Habitat volunteers. We ate lots of food and played a lot of silly and fun games. It was great getting to know some of our MIzzou family in the Denver area.

This morning, Johnathan woke us up with Rebecca Black's "Friday" to mix it up from the usual "Happy" by Pharrell Williams... both of which we have a love hate relationship with now. We then all got ready and headed to the site. As soon as we got to the site they split our group in half. While some of us were working on laying down the floor boards to one house, the others were building walls in the basement in Allal's house (One of the future home owners). Our first day on site the only ting built was concrete basement walls, so seeing the main floor completed made us feel very accomplished and exemplified our contribution to our service. At noon we broke for lunch and it was AMAZING!!! The volunteers made a mini Chipotle for us with oranges and delicious cookies. While eating this deliciousness we sat on the grass in the sun and bonded with the Americorps workers Alyson, Chris, and Lauren! Alyson walked us through the Globville neighborhood afte to show us what the houses will look like when they are complete.

Once we were back to work, we really took that time to solidify the bond we had made with the future home owners as it was our last time to see them. We came to a realization that our day was coming to an end and were all really GUMBY!! Other then working with the families obvi.. we thoroughly enjoyed learning how to use all types of tool and seeing how the base of a house is built. By the end of the day you could tell how confident we all became in our construction abilities and how well we learned to work as one (ONE Mizzou).  We finished the day by leaving our permanent mark on the floorboards we completed... literally.

It was an emotional goodbye to the staff, volunteers, and family. However, this experience has inspired a lot of our group to want to work with H4H in the future.

We spent our last supper nomming on some za at Mellow Mushroom! After dinner, half the group went to Wallyworld to purchase toys and donate to a particular family we met.

The nuggets are very concerned with last minute bonding (which we are missing by writing this post) so....

Peace, Love and Cheddar Bunnies,

#flawless

Love, Gracie and Derek
