Columbia, SC - Habitat for Humanity (Post 2)

Hey there everyone! This is Garrett (Gunner) and Bailee (Betty) giving you a run down of things that happened today. The group woke up at 7:45 to Kanye West's Good Morning… Some were more energetic than others (cough cough Richard). But everyone was pumped and ready to go once we got to the Restore building. Each day we work at the Restore the seniors get to pick a theme for names to use the whole day. Garrett chose to morph each participants parent's middle name. Some examples include Kay Ray, Russene, Thurmarks, Lynn G, and Eugenna.

The first part of the day the group was split into three different groups to complete three different tasks. One group was in charge of moving thousands of textbooks from a crowded hallway to organized pallet. Another was responsible for building two free-standing tables in an area where donations could be sorted and organized. The last group continued to work on the tool cage in the back area of the store.

We took a break for lunch around 11:30 and had delicious cold cut sandwiches. Nathan introduced the group to a delicious new sandwich that had jelly, mustard, and ham. Bakke said it was pretty delicious (some of us are skeptical). After lunch we played around on a large push cart and a handmade longboard. After some fun, the group decided to work together to finish the grueling task of moving the rest of the textbooks onto pallets. A job that would have taken the smaller group a day to finish was knocked out in less than an hour.

After finishing the cage the group split up again to finish tasks like the cage and the free standing tables. Once the cage was in place, we were able to paint the structure. We chose to put the great state of Missouri proudly on the wall along with all of our handprints (and one footprint…Gunner). Then we said our goodbyes to Talisha, Matt, and Tim and headed out to clean up at the Y.

Once we got cleaned up, we all caught some southern rays and enjoyed throwing around a football and Frisbee. Connor learned how to throw a football for the first time, attempting to use either hand to get the best throw. AASB alumni Natalie Rooney joined us for a barbeque grilled up by Rachel, Connor, and Emma: the world's best grill masters.

We capped off dinner with some blue bell ice cream, laughter, and sunset. All of us decided we should go check out University of South Carolina's campus and got ready to jump in to Mom and Dad. However, the boys realized some of their shoes were missing. While the guys were off at Wal-Mart earlier, the girls decided to play a prank on them. The girls stole a single shoe from each guy and stowed it away in the girl's bathroom. The guys demanded for the return of their shoes, holding our precious Frozen DVD hostage until their shoes were safely on their feet.

Finally we traveled with Nat Roon to campus and got a small tour of the building she works in on campus. After, she led us to the horseshoe, walking backwards through campus like a true Mizzou tour guide. We were all impressed by the Horseshoe and the garden we found full of blossoming flowers. Once Natalie left us, we decided to capture some photos for our scavenger hunt. The whole group climbed a monstrous tree, took a prom photo by a spewing fountain/reflection pond, took a "fratty" picture on the steps of a performing arts building, and did an accurate depiction of a famous statue on campus (Bakke and Bobby). Then the team headed home for the night for some reflection and (A)ASB family bonding.

Currently, the group is desperately trying to watch Frozen on a projector in our cozy family room. But our efforts have not been fruitful. We hope to watch the movie either Wednesday night or Friday on our way to Charleston. IT WILL BE WATCHED!!!!

Enthusiasm and team morale continue to grow as the team looks forward to going back to the black and gold house we worked on yesterday. We can't wait to make more memories with our ASB fam, face challenges, and grow stronger together.

Peace out girl scouts,
Garrett and Bailee
