Columbia, SC - Health/Spanish Speaking

March 27, 2013

Today was indeed an eventful day for our group. From building airlines to making 200 business cards, we definitely have accomplished a lot in our three days of service.

We split up. Half of the group went to help at a local Hispanic populated health clinic while the rest stayed with the PASOs program at the University.

At the clinic, Ms. Linda - the snack pusher - kept Maddie and Evan extremely well-fed. She force fed them M&Ms and coffee while they scanned hundreds of medical records. Meanwhile at PASOs, the rest of the group starved, eagerly waiting the other half's arrival. While doing so, Jazmin accomplished a lifelong desire to make a fully functioning paper plane. She was so excited that she decided to make an entire copyrighted company she likes to call "Jazzie Jetz Airline." Others in the group started a pamphlet to help teach Spanish speakers medical terms and about their rights.

"Jazzie Jetz Airline" made its first flight in a paper airplane contest against Audra and Megan's lesser known paper airplanes...even though Audra's basic design won. Nate/Matt filmed the contest and the footage will soon be used for "Jazzie Jetz" commercial.

Nate/Matt decided to craft paper hats for himself, his alter ego and his water bottle.

After our day of service, Myriam gave a tour of the University of South Carolina's campus. There were zero cuties for Jazmin. She is no longer considering moving to the state anymore after her disappointment. Myriam managed to lead us jaywalking across three intersections...with incoming traffic. Thankfully, we are still alive. She was just really happy to be a Gamecock apparently. Cocky enough to not acknowledge street signs.

The church that we're staying at generously provided us with a home-cooked meal of spaghetti and the best sweet tea of all-time. After that, we went to go get ice cream at Marble Slab and took a walk downtown.

To finish the night, we watched Mean Girls and made cute, little friendship bracelets...Maddie was the only one to be successful in this endeavor...then proceeded to make fun of the rest of our pitiful bracelets.

After Mean Girls, we watched twerk team videos on YouTube. The girls were "ratchet" so the group insisted that Landon and Jazmin start their own classy twerk team. It shan't ever happen.

But our group will continue and wants to encourage all of the other ASB groups to #TURNUP! :)
