Jonesville - Poverty

Happy Hump Day! I can't believe Wednesday is already over and we're over half way finished with our time here in Virginia. There are so many things I want to put in this blog, but for now I'll just stick to our happenings from today. We started our morning off kind of slow since most of us had stayed up late the night before putting gifts together for the family we have been helping. After we all managed to pull ourselves out of bed and get ready, we made it to our site with the hopes of being able to finish our project today. Our "mole" crew, minus me, went back under the house to finish up the insulation, while the rest of us stayed above ground to finish up the tiling, dry wall, and trim in the kitchen. I thought I was going to be the lucky one, getting out of having to go back under the house, but little did I know the awful job that awaited me. If anyone's ever had the wonderful opportunity of cutting tile without a wet saw, you know what I'm talking about. After about four hours of cutting I had broken what seemed like a thousand tiles, my hands were blistered, and I had only managed to make about 15 tile cuts. At this point, the crawl space under the house sounded like a pretty good place to be. I felt like there wasn't much at this point that could make my day any better, but with this kind of work, there always seems to be a moment that brings you back to the whole reason as to why you are there. This moment came for me at the end of the day when we presented our family with the gifts we had stayed up late the night before making. This moment reminded me of the whole reason why I was spending my Spring Break in Jonesville, VA instead of on a beach somewhere- to help people like our family, and to make sure they had a livable home they could enjoy. Moments like these made crawling under a crawlspace, cutting tile with a blade, and cleaning grout off a floor so worth it, and reminded me that even if I had the chance, I wouldn't have spent my spring break any other way. After our long day at the site, our group wanted to have a little local fun, so we decided to check out the local blue grass band with our friends from South Carolina. To our disappointment, half the band members didn't show up, but the two that did were very friendly and even played a few songs on their fiddle and guitar for us. We then ended our night at a local gas station where we had what we were told was some of the best ice cream in Lee county. We don't know what kind of adventures tomorrow will bring, but we are hoping they include a wet saw, so we can finally finish our project for our family to enjoy.
