Ah, another glorious morning is in Hayesville. After a power breakfast of scrambled eggs and coffee, we made our way to the Hiwassee Watershed Coalition headquarters where we signed some wavers and reminisced about the big mouth Billy bass and other obscure 90s fads. After getting through all of the paper work we followed Tony, the watershed representative and our invasive plant removal guide, to the Murphy high school. Behind the high school track we battled our new nemesis, the Japanese Honeysuckle. This nasty invasive plant wraps itself around trees and strangles them! Well, we chopped down those gnarly little devils and saved the trees behind the school. Also in Murphy we saw some of the serious damage caused by the tornado a couple weeks ago. Although thankfully nobody was hurt, there was quite a lot of debris and blown down trees.
After the morning battling Honeysuckle, we followed Tony to our next site. This place was a really beautiful river walk with some majorly gnarly Privet plants. These little buggers were growing like crazy on the hills next to the walk. After a lunch of sandwiches and pretzels, we scaled these hills and ripped and chopped and cleared out those invasives!
As lovely as this all sounds, we are all pretty ripped up. The invasive rose bushes snagged our arms and legs and the sun definitely did give some of us a burn. For the most part though, we are bronzed with glorious famer's tans, which we tried to even out after a jump in lake Chatuge.
After our post-invasive-removal bronzing session we all cleaned up and went to China Buffet for dinner. Now we're off to the lake house for a game and some rest! #MURPHDERRRP4LYFE!~
