Foley - Habitat

Our Monday started out bright and early at 7 am. All of us were so excited to learn what our week entailed. After we arrived at the site, we were greeted by a passionate Habitat-For-Humanity volunteer. She told us the Habitat-For-Humanity story. The group felt so inspired by the story, which made us even more excited to get started.

One of the things she told us about was the Restore, which is like a big thrift store that sells items such as chairs, cabinets, doors, and other household items. All of these items are donated to Habitat, and it is their biggest fundraiser. We spent the day working at the restore doing various tasks. Some of us sorted paint, organized furniture, threw wood cartons out, and did other manual labor. The men enjoyed flaunting their manliness by doing lots of heavy lifting and using crow bars. The ladies covered themselves in paint, while they mixed and threw out paint.

After we were done working at the site we came back to our housing, and cooled off for a bit. Then half the group headed to the beach. There we swam, layed on the beach, and went running. The other half stayed back at our housing, and when the beach group came back they were welcomed back to a spaghetti dinner. We all ate together and bonded. A group of church women came up to us at dinner, and thanked us for what we are doing in Foley. One woman even offered to cook us dinner on Wednesday. We cannot wait for our southern style meal on Wednesday. After dinner the fun continued when we played a charades like game called Salad Bowl. It got group members out of their comfort zone, which made everyone laugh and loosen up. Then we played 'umbrella baseball' in the big cafeteria in between all of the tables and chairs. Tn we It was a great first day of work!
